A higher deductible can look attractive when the premium falls. The decision also changes how much cash you may need when a covered loss occurs. Compare the annual savings with the additional amount you would have to contribute to a claim.

The NAIC advises consumers considering higher deductibles to make sure they can afford the out-of-pocket amount. A premium reduction is not automatically a good trade if it leaves the household unable to fund repairs after an accident.

Try a written two-column exercise. In one column, record the premium at your current deductible. In the other, record the proposed premium and deductible. Then ask yourself whether the larger amount could be paid without borrowing or delaying essential bills.

Request more than one deductible option and ask which coverages each applies to. Keep the exercise focused on your budget rather than a generic promise of savings. A licensed agent can explain the terms, while the final choice should reflect the funds you actually have available.
