Used Car Listings: Compare the Out-the-Door Price

Consumer explainer | Used Cars
A used car's listed price is not a full comparison if one quote includes charges that another omits. Ask the dealer for a written total for the exact vehicle before focusing on a monthly payment.
The FTC's used-car guidance encourages buyers to understand the transaction and the vehicle's condition. Use the written deal documents, including the Buyers Guide where applicable, as part of your review rather than relying only on a listing.
Our suggested price worksheet separates the vehicle, taxes and fees, optional products, financing, and any trade-in. Ask for each item to be explained and identify which are optional. Compare financing terms independently from the advertised payment.
Keep negotiations tied to the vehicle identification number and the agreed details. If the paperwork differs from the quote, pause and ask why. A clear total does not establish mechanical condition, so combine price comparison with history checks and an independent inspection.
